Upper Mustang Trekking

In Upper Mustang trekking, the former Kingdom of Lo, Tibetan culture and language still prevail. The area previously forbidden for foreigners has been open for visitors since 1992. Although the monarchy formally ended in 2008, the King of Mustang is still widely recognised by his people. The area lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range and at the northern end of the Kaligandaki River. It is a high altitude desert zone, marked by its starkly dry moonscape like landscape with sandstone pillars and irregular moraine terraces presented in a colourful mix of earthen brown, yellow, red and grey. This region is also full of some of Nepal’s oldest Buddhist Monasteries, ancient and isolated villages with quaint white washed houses. Together with the traditionally built mud-brick house villages, the Tibetan culture and the almost treeless barren landscape it is one of the most interesting and picturesque places in Nepal. The whole area has an isolated and mystical feel to it.

Our trek starts from Jomsom, first along the Kali Gandki River and then continuing climbing on out of one Kali gandaki huge side valleys all the way to Lo Manthang, the old capital of upper mustang. Lo Manthang is a walled city still with a number of ancient monasteries that contain magnificent old wall paintings large parts of which have been restored recently. We would recommend to stay in Lo manthang for a couple of days as the surrounding areas offer interesting options for day excursions. We hike back to Jomsom on a different route, via Muktinatrh which is an important pilfrimage place for Hindus & Buddhist alike. There are several tour options though.
