Lower Dolpo Trekking

The Lower Dolpo trek is one of Nepal’s outstandingly beautiful treks, taking us through charming river valleys and rhododendron, pine and juniper forests, to the amazing turquois-blue Phokhsundo Lake. The Lower Dolpo area opened for trekking in 1989 and in many parts of the region people still lead a primeval life. Sightings of blue sheep and Himalayan tahr are not unusual, and if you are very lucky even a snow leopard might appear. Moreover, Dolpo is an area were the old Bonpo culture, religious practice and monasteries can still be found. The region is also known for Yarchagumba (“caterpillar fungus”), which is collected for its alleged medicinal purposes.
We start the trek from Jufal airport, gradually ascending through a beautiful river valley and jungle up to Phokhsundo Lake. From there we continue through alpine landscapes across Numala pass (5290m), and Baga-La pass  (5175m), passing the villages of Pelung Tang and Tok Khyu before reaching Dho Tarap. Dho Tarap is one of the largest villages in the region, with many monasteries and plenty of opportunity to observe the local culture and traditions. We then continue along the river back to Jufal. Along different parts of the route we can enjoy excellent views of the Dhaulagiri range, Nilgiri, Kyangyuripa, Annapurna range and many other mountains.
There are some variations in route options possible which we can adjust according to your wishes and needs. Please contact us for more information.
